VGSA normally follows the standard USA age divisions as listed below. However, we do feel there are situations where it might be best for the player to play down an age group to ensure safety and development. League Directors will work with coaches to determine which players might be more successful starting in a lower age division and contact parents for approval.
T-Ball: 6u(Ages 5-6) T-Ball introduces young players to the basics of the game. The purpose is to have FUN and learn the game. Players use an ten-inch "Incrediball" (softer softball) for safety. Must be age 5 as of December 31st , 2023.
Training League (coach pitch): 6u (Ages 6-7) Players continue to learn fundamentals. The coach pitches to the players, but they can still use a “T” for their last strike. Players continue to use a ten-inch “Incrediball” (softer softball).
8 and Under: (Ages 7-8) This level is for players who have already played at least one year of training league, or, for those that will have to move up to 10U the following season. Girls will pitch an 11-inch softie from 30 feet. Walks are not allowed so coaches will assist when needed. They will also be introduced to leading off and bunting to prepare them for 10U. See the League Rules for more specifics.
10 and Under: (Ages 9-10) Pitchers pitch from 35 feet and they continue to use an 11 " ball, but it is a regular softball. League rules allow for coach assisted pitching after the third walk to facilitate more hitting and defense opportunities. Base stealing is introduced, but no one can steal home. (Some of the more experienced 10U teams may elect to follow strict ASA rules during gameplay) Tournaments are introduced at this level. There may be some travel involved at the higher "A" level.
12 and Under: (Ages 11-12) We move to standard 12 "softball and Amateur Softball Association (USA) rules. The pitching distance is forty feet.
14 and Under: (Ages 13-14) Standard USA rules and the pitching distance is increased to 43 feet. The 14U division is made up of mostly independent travel teams that make their own choices on players. VGSA plans to form a league only team through general registration each season but we often do not get enough players. If you register without a team, a League Coordinator will be in touch with your options which may also include the recommendation to start at the 12U level if your player is new to softball. Some seasons we may also schedule the more experienced 12U teams against the 14U teams to ensure they have enough games. Coaches will be notified in advance to approve this option.
VGSA league games begin in mid April and goes to mid-end of June. Each team will play between 10 - 12 games per season.
